Vanadium is named after 'Vanadis', the old Norse name for the Scandinavian goddess Freyja.

Freyja, a goddess of love and beauty, could be considered a Norse equivalent of the Greek Aphrodite and Roman Venus. So I gave vanadium another symbol for Venus (the one also used for bronze and burnt copper). I was already considering using it for something so why not vanadium?
